Turtle Snorkeling on Oahu: Meeting Green Sea Turtles the Right Way

Swimming With Honu

Along with our dolphin trips, one of the most beloved ocean experiences on Oahu is snorkeling with dolphins and green sea turtles, known in Hawaiian as honu. Our turtle snorkeling tours take you to calm, clear water where these gentle creatures feed and rest. Meeting a honu up close is unforgettable, and doing it respectfully keeps them safe and wild. Here is what to know.

Where and When You See Them

Green sea turtles are common in Oahu’s warm coastal waters, often gliding over shallow reefs to graze on algae or resting on the bottom. On a guided snorkel tour, the crew knows the calm, turtle-friendly spots and the best conditions, usually calmer morning water with good visibility. Sightings are common, though never guaranteed, since these are wild animals.

The Honu Are Protected

Hawaiian green sea turtles are protected under federal and state law, so respectful viewing is not just kind, it is required. The golden rules:

  • Keep your distance, at least 10 feet, and more if you can.
  • Never touch, chase, ride, or feed a turtle.
  • Do not block a turtle’s path to the surface to breathe.
  • Float calmly and let the honu come and go on its own.

Giving them space actually leads to better encounters, since a relaxed turtle will often linger nearby.

Tips for a Great Turtle Snorkel

Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral the turtles depend on, and take a moment to get comfortable with your mask and breathing before you look for turtles. Move slowly and quietly in the water, keep your fins away from the reef, and simply watch. A waterproof camera is great, but never crowd a turtle for a photo.

A Respectful Encounter to Remember

Snorkeling with Oahu’s green sea turtles is a highlight of any trip, and treating the honu with care makes it even better. Keep your distance, stay calm, and let them lead. Do that, and you will come away with a magical memory and the good feeling of having met these ancient animals the right way. Ask us about our turtle snorkeling tours.
