You sit upright on a self-propelled electric scooter while your head stays inside a clear air-filled dome. It works on the same simple principle as holding an upside-down glass underwater: the trapped air keeps the space dry, so you can breathe normally and even keep your hair and glasses dry while you glide over the reef.
Your adventure starts with a scenic cruise across Maunalua Bay aboard a 50 foot catamaran, with views of Diamond Head, Koko Crater, and the Koolau mountains. At the reef, a professional guide gives a full briefing, then you climb onto your scooter and cruise the coral gardens at a gentle, relaxing pace, watching tropical fish and Hawaiian green sea turtles pass by. Because you never have to swim or dive, it is perfect for non-swimmers and first-timers alike.
The whole experience runs about two hours, with roughly twenty minutes of ride time on the scooter itself, plus time to snorkel and swim from the catamaran. The submarine scooter is designed to be safe and beginner-friendly, but a few requirements apply for everyone's safety. Riders must be at least 10 years old, between 4 feet and 6 feet 8 inches tall, and weigh no more than 350 pounds. No scuba or diving experience is needed, and non-swimmers are welcome. For safety reasons, the scooter is not available to guests who are pregnant or have certain medical conditions, so please contact us with any questions before booking. This tour operates with a minimum of 10 participants.
Tours run twice daily, typically a morning departure and an early afternoon departure, six days a week (closed Sundays). Wear your swimsuit and arrive ready for the water, since you will also have the chance to snorkel and swim from the catamaran.
This tour departs from Island Water Sports Hawaii at Maunalua Bay, on Oahu's scenic southeast shore, at 7192 Kalanianaole Highway, Suite E-111, Honolulu, HI 96825, a short drive from Waikiki toward Hawaii Kai.
Cancellations must be received at least 48 hours before the tour date and will incur a 3 percent processing fee. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours notice are charged in full, and no-shows are also charged in full.
