Two Shows in One Season
If you are planning an Oahu dolphin tour in the cooler months, you may be in for a bonus. Every winter, thousands of humpback whales travel to Hawaii’s warm, shallow waters to mate, give birth, and raise their calves. That means the same boats that take you to see spinner dolphins are often out among the whales too. Here is how the two seasons overlap and what it means for your trip.
When Whale Season Happens
Humpback whales are generally in Hawaiian waters from about November through April, with the peak usually falling in January, February, and March. Dolphins, on the other hand, live around Oahu all year, so spinner dolphin tours never really stop. Book an ocean tour in the heart of winter and you get the best of both worlds: resident dolphins plus the chance to spot the season’s visiting whales.

Quick Season Snapshot
- Whales: roughly November to April, peaking January through March.
- Dolphins: year round, with calm morning waters best.
- Best overlap: winter mornings on the leeward, west, and south shores.
- Bonus: many operators run dedicated whale watch trips in season too.
Where the Overlap Is Best
The calm, sheltered water along Oahu’s leeward coast and south shore is prime for both animals. Dolphins favor these protected areas in the morning, and passing whales are often seen from the same stretch of coastline. On a single winter tour it is not unusual to watch spinner dolphins early, then catch a whale’s spout, tail slap, or full breach farther offshore.
Watching Whales the Right Way
Humpbacks are protected under federal law, and boats are required to keep at least 100 yards away. Reputable operators know the rules and will never chase or crowd an animal. Whale sightings are also never guaranteed, since these are wild animals on their own schedule, so treat any whale you see as a wonderful bonus on top of your dolphin tour rather than a sure thing.
Plan Your Winter Tour
If seeing both dolphins and whales sounds like the perfect Hawaii day, aim for a calm winter morning and let the crew know you are hoping for whales as well. We can help you compare the Oahu tours and operators most likely to give you that double feature during whale season.
