Dinner for a Dolphin
Dolphins are among the ocean’s most skilled hunters, and watching a pod feed is a thrilling sight. But what exactly is on the menu for the wild dolphins off Oahu, and how do they catch it? Their diet and clever hunting tricks are a big part of what makes these animals so fascinating. Here is a look at what dolphins eat and how they feed.
What’s on the Menu
Dolphins are carnivores, and their diet is mostly fish and squid. The exact meal depends on the species and where they live. Oahu’s spinner dolphins favor small fish and squid that rise toward the surface at night, while larger dolphins like bottlenose eat a wider range of fish and squid. A big dolphin can eat many pounds of food a day to fuel its active, warm-blooded body.
Hunting as a Team
One of the coolest things about dolphins is that they often hunt together. Working as a group, they herd fish into tight, swirling balls called bait balls, then take turns darting through to feed. Some populations around the world have invented amazing local techniques, like stirring up rings of mud to trap fish or riding waves onto the shore to catch them. It shows just how intelligent and adaptable they are.

Why Oahu’s Spinners Hunt at Night
Here is what makes Oahu’s spinner dolphins special: they do most of their hunting after dark. At night they travel into deep water offshore to feed on small fish and squid that migrate up toward the surface. Then, during the day, they move into calm, shallow bays to rest and recover. This is exactly why you often see spinner pods relaxing nearshore in the daytime, and why giving resting dolphins space is so important.
