Oahu Dolphin Tour Questions

Everything visitors ask us most about seeing and swimming with dolphins on Oahu, from the best season to what to pack and how the rules work.

What is the best time of year to see dolphins on Oahu?

Hawaiian spinner dolphins live in Oahu's waters all year, so there is no off season for seeing them. Morning tours tend to have the calmest water and the best light. If you visit between roughly December and April you may also spot humpback whales on the same trip.

Will I definitely see dolphins?

These are wild animals, so no honest operator can promise a sighting on every trip. That said, the west coast tours run in areas where spinner dolphins rest almost daily, and sighting rates are very high. If you want a guaranteed face to face meeting, a dolphin encounter at Sea Life Park is the sure thing.

Is swimming with wild dolphins legal in Hawaii?

Federal rules make it illegal to swim toward, chase, or approach wild Hawaiian spinner dolphins within 50 yards. Reputable boat tours follow these rules and keep a respectful, legal distance while you watch from the boat. If you want to physically swim alongside a dolphin, that experience is offered with the trained dolphins at Sea Life Park.

Do the tours include hotel pickup?

The Dolphins & You boat tour from Waianae includes free round trip transportation from select Waikiki hotels. Sea Life Park encounters do not include transport, but the park is an easy drive or rideshare from Waikiki on the windward side of the island.

Are the tours good for kids and non swimmers?

Yes. The wild dolphin boat tour welcomes families, with infants under one year not permitted for safety. At Sea Life Park you can choose how close you get: the Touch and Feed option is completely dry and open to ages one and up, the waist deep Dolphin Encounter suits ages four and up, and the deeper water Swim Adventure is for ages eight and up.

What should I bring and wear?

For boat and snorkel trips, wear your swimsuit and bring a towel, reef safe sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. A light jacket is smart in winter months. Most gear like snorkel equipment is provided. For dry encounters at the park you can simply wear comfortable clothes.

How much do dolphin tours cost?

Prices depend on the experience. The wild Dolphin Watch and Snorkel tour starts around 151 dollars for adults with seasonal discounts often available. Sea Life Park encounters range from about 99 dollars for the Touch and Feed up to roughly 300 dollars for the in water Swim Adventure. Check each tour page for current pricing.

What is the cancellation policy?

Policies vary slightly by operator, but the wild dolphin boat tour offers a full refund when you cancel at least 48 hours before your tour. Trip protection can usually be added at checkout for extra flexibility. Always review the policy listed on the booking page before you confirm.
